What is The UNSPC Code? | Enventure

The State of California utilizes the UNSPSC to standardize the description and classification of the goods and services purchased statewide.  This level of standardization enables the Procurement Division to effectively analyze, Strategical Source goods and services, and fully utilize the electronic commerce (eCommerce) capabilities used in today’s marketplace.

The UNSPSC list was established as a hierarchy with 5 different levels of classification that make up a single 10-digit code.  Each of the 5 levels are represented by a 2-digit code, and each 2-digit jump provides greater details about the good or service.  The state of California has limited it's UNSPSC list selections to 6 and 8 digit codes.

THE UNSPSC 5 LEVEL HIERARCHY BREAKS DOWN AS FOLLOWS

5 Levels of UNSPSC Classification Using a 10-digit code (SSFFKKCCBB)

SS Segment Level (2-digit code)

Aggregation of product & services into general segments for analytical purposes

XXFF Family Level (4-digit code)

Segments grouped into inter-related product & service categories

XXXXKK Class Level (6-digit code)

Families group further into product & services sharing common characteristic

XXXXXXCC Commodity Level (8-digit code)

Classes are further grouped into products & services with interchangeable

                      characteristic variations

XXXXXXXXBB Business Function (10-digit code which California doesn't use)

Commodities are finally grouped into their business function within organization

Here is how code 43211602 should read:

43000000 - Segment Information Technology Broadcasting and Telecommunications

43210000 - Family Computer Equipment and Accessories

43211600 - Class Computer Accessories

43211602 - Commodity Docking stations

This means that code 43211602 is the correct code for Information Technology, Computer Equipment and Accessories, Computer Accessories, Docking station.

The Difference Between 6 and 8 Digit UNSPSC

In order for California to be effective at strategic sourcing it is important to capture a standardized description of purchases.  The Commodity code (8-digit code) provides precisely enough description for most goods and services the state procures.  In the case of food procurements though, the Class code (6-digit code) works better.  To afford the State the flexibility it needs to accurately describe its purchases, California's custom UNSPSC list is composed of both 6 and 8 digit codes.

In most instances DGS needs all of the description included with the 8-digit codes, and encourages buyers and vendors to be specific as possible every time they make a UNSPSC selection.
